Here are some more general points important to consider when arranging to walk someone else's dog:
- Pay attention to the leash and any further items the owner has given you such as poop bags, toys, medication, or treats. You will need to give everything back when you have completed the walk. We ask that owners carry a list of items they have given their walker.
- Consider the dog’s age.
- Ask the owner for how long they want the dog to be walked. Make sure you keep to the time you agreed to and notify the owner of any delays.
- Do not give the dog any food you have not asked the owner about!
- Discuss if you are allowed to let the dog off-leash in closed park areas. Make sure you always watch the dog when it is off the leash.
- Pay attention to the dog at all times!
- Do not bring the dog anywhere not previously discussed with the owner.
- Give the owner a short summary of yourself before you leave for the walk and anything you have planned for the walk such as route and parks you want to visit.
- Be nice and respectful to the owner, the dog, and any other people you might encounter during the walk.
- Pay attention to your surroundings!
- Tell the owner how the walk went when returning the dog.
Walking someone else's dog requires taking responsibility and letting your dog be walked by another person requires trust. Make sure both walker and owner understand each other well and care for the dog.
