The adoption process varies from shelter to shelter but seem to be relatively similar. At the likes of the DSPCA in normal covid free circumstances, you must visit the shelter to enquire about adopting a dog. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, shelters have had to develop a new, covid safe adoption process. Here is what to expect from adopting a dog during a global pandemic.
Currently, the DSPCA shelter is closed to the public and all rehoming is done virtually. Dogs have very detailed profiles on the DSPCA website to ensure that they are matched with the right home. You can view the dogs available for adoption through the link at the end of this post. You can then register your interest for a specific dog available for adoption. Once you have done this, the adoption teams may send you out an application form to fill out. It is important to note that some dogs receive many applications and that yours may not be chosen. The DSPCA will then schedule an appointment for you to come and meet the dog you are interested in adopting at the shelter. If you happen to have another dog in your house, a dog meet will be scheduled to ensure the pets will get along. A virtual home check will then be completed to ensure that your home is suitable for the dog to live in. Once successful, a team member will bring the dog to your home and a 1-week trial period will begin to make sure everyone is happy. Finally, adoption papers are filled in and fees can be paid online. Currently, the fee for adopting a dog from the DSPCA is €185. This fee covers neutering, microchipping, registering the microchip, the dogs first two vaccinations and 6 weeks pet insurance with Allianz for dogs under 5 years old.
The DSPCA is just one of the many shelters in Dublin with animals looking for their forever home. Other shelters include Dogs Trust, Dogs aid and Dogs in Distress. If you are thinking of welcoming a rescue dog into your life, please ensure that the dog will fit in with your lifestyle long-term as a dog is for life, not just for lockdown.
